Is your Ford radio asking for a code?

If your Ford radio shows CODE, ENTER KEYCODE or LOCKED after a battery change, it is not broken. Older factory radios have an anti-theft lock that switches on whenever the radio loses power: a flat battery, a replaced battery, a pulled fuse or a radio that has been removed. Until the correct four-digit code is entered, the radio stays silent.

The code does not depend on the car. It belongs to the radio, and it is tied to the radio's serial number. That is why we ask for the serial rather than a registration number or VIN: a radio can be replaced during a car's life, and only the serial of the radio that is fitted now identifies the right code.

Ford radio code retrieval from the serial number is simple. You find the serial, tell us about the car, and our UK team looks the code up and emails it to you. It is free.

Where to find your Ford radio serial number (M or V)

The serial is a letter such as M or V followed by six digits. Here is where to look for each type of radio.

6000 CD and Sony radios

With the radio on and CODE showing, hold buttons 1 and 6 together for a few seconds. On many units the display then shows a serial starting with V (for example V123456), sometimes M, or a longer SOCD... string on some Sony units. Film the screen if it changes quickly.

4500 RDS and some other units

On some units the serial appears with buttons 2 and 6 held together, usually while CODE is displayed. The serial typically starts with M followed by six digits.

Cassette radios and older units

These often do not show the serial on screen. Remove the radio with Ford release keys (it normally slides out) and read the serial from the label next to the barcode.

Travelpilot navigation

Navigation units need removing. The serial is on the label on the case and typically starts with BP or C7. Copy the full string, not the Ford part number.

Not every unit behaves the same, so if a button combination does nothing, use the label. Never use the VIN, the registration or the long Ford part number as the serial.

What do M and V mean?

The first letter of the serial tells you roughly what kind of Ford audio unit you have. M serials are typically found on older cassette and early CD units and are usually read from the label (and from the 4500 RDS with buttons 2 and 6). V serials are typical of the 6000 CD and later Sony units, and can often be shown on the display. Either way, you need all seven characters: the letter and the six digits.

Some radios show a longer string with the serial inside it, for example a Sony string such as SOCD followed by letters and digits. Enter what is printed or shown exactly, and choose the closest serial format in the form. A misread character (a V that looks like a 5, an O that is really a 0) is a common reason for a wrong result.

Which Ford radios we cover

We handle requests for the radios below. Fitment notes on this site describe what is typical. They are not guaranteed: trim level, market and any radio swap during the car's life can change what is fitted, so always use the serial from the radio in your car. Not every serial can be found, and if we cannot find yours we will tell you by email.

Is the Ford radio code free? Ford dealer vs Security Code card vs our service

There are three ways to get a Ford radio code, and the cheapest is to start with the card. Ford's own guidance is that the code is on the Security Code card in the vehicle's document pack, and that a Ford dealer can help if you cannot find it.

RouteCostWhat you need
Security Code cardFreeThe card from the document pack, if you still have it
A Ford dealerSet by the dealer, so ask firstProof of ownership. Ford says its dealers can help if you cannot find your code
Our serviceFreeThe radio serial number. Our team emails your code, so it is not shown on screen

Our service is free. We do not take payment and we never ask for card details. We are an independent service, not affiliated with Ford. There is no tool on this site that shows a code on screen: each request is looked up by our team and the code is sent to your email address.

Newer Fords with SYNC do not normally need a code at all. Ford says they are paired digitally with the vehicle.

What to do if the radio says WAIT or LOCKED

These messages come from the radio's anti-theft system, and the exact behaviour depends on the unit.

  • CODE / ENTER KEYCODE: the radio is locked and is waiting for the four-digit code.
  • WAIT: the radio is pausing code entry, usually after a wrong code. Do not keep guessing.
  • LOCKED (sometimes followed by a number, such as LOCKED 10 or LOCKED 13): the radio is refusing further entries, usually after repeated wrong attempts.

Websites give different waiting times and recovery steps for these messages, and Ford does not publish them for its older radios, so we do not quote a time or a method. If your radio says WAIT or LOCKED, stop entering codes, check the serial you used, and contact a Ford dealer or radio specialist for the safest next step. The best prevention is to take the code from a reliable source and check each digit before you confirm.

How to enter your Ford radio code

  1. Switch the ignition and the radio on. The display shows CODE, ENTER CODE or ENTER KEYCODE.
  2. On a typical 6000 CD or similar radio, press preset 1 until the first digit is right, then preset 2 for the second digit, 3 for the third and 4 for the fourth.
  3. Check all four digits, then press and hold button 5 for a couple of seconds to confirm. The radio should start playing.

Radios with a keypad or touchscreen, such as Travelpilot, use their own entry method instead. If your handbook describes a different method for your radio, follow the handbook.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Ford radio code really free?

Yes. We do not charge for looking up your code and we never ask for card details. Our team looks each code up by hand and emails it to you, so it does not appear on screen. We cannot promise that every serial number can be found; if we cannot find yours, we will tell you by email.

Where do I find my Ford radio serial number?

On many 6000 CD and Sony radios you can show it on the display: switch the radio on and hold buttons 1 and 6 together. On some 4500 RDS units it is buttons 2 and 6. If nothing appears, remove the radio with Ford release keys and read the label on the case. It usually starts with M or V followed by six digits.

No serial number on the display?

Not every radio can show it. Cassette radios, many older units and Travelpilot navigation units normally need to be removed so you can read the label on the case. Ford release keys cost a few pounds and the unit slides out without disconnecting anything.

My serial does not start with M or V. Can you still help?

Possibly. Some units carry serials starting with L, C, Z, A, BP or C7, or a longer Sony or Travelpilot string. Choose the closest option in the form and type the serial exactly as printed, including every letter and zero. We will tell you by email if we cannot find a code.

Can I get my radio code from my registration number or VIN?

No. We do not look codes up by registration number or VIN. The code belongs to the radio unit, and a radio may have been replaced during the car's life, so we need the serial number printed on the radio that is in the car now.

Does a newer Ford with SYNC need a radio code?

Normally not. Ford says that models with SYNC are digitally paired with the vehicle and do not need a code. The code lock mainly affects older factory CD, cassette and navigation radios.

Will the code still work after I disconnect the battery again?

Yes. The code stays the same for that radio, so keep it somewhere safe. You will need to enter it again whenever the radio loses power.

Will a code from another Ford radio work in mine?

No. The code is tied to the serial number of each radio. If your radio has been replaced, use the serial of the radio that is fitted now.
